Power protection · Buy the right capacity

What size UPS does your PC actually need?

Choose enough backup power to save your work and shut down. The biggest VA number on the box is only part of the decision.

The quick verdict

Choose a UPS around your equipment’s actual load and the shutdown time you need. A desktop workstation may justify more backup capacity than a laptop with a healthy battery. Someone protecting only networking equipment has a different requirement again.

A UPS supplies temporary power; a surge protector alone does not. For a budget PC, prioritise a suitable unit, reliable shutdown and affordable replacement batteries before displays, extra ports or an impressive model name.

Start with the load, not your PC power supply’s label

An 850W PC power supply does not mean the computer continuously draws 850W from the wall. Use measured input power under the workload you want to protect, or the equipment maker’s appropriate load data. Include the monitor and any network equipment you intend to put on battery backup.

Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide advises capacity headroom above the load. The planner below uses 25% extra watt capacity as an illustrative starting point. You must also check the UPS’s VA limit, peak-load handling, compatibility and runtime curve.

Your load-planning worksheet

Enter measured or properly specified watts. Use 0 for equipment you will not connect. Nothing is sent or saved by this calculator.

Enter all three values to calculate the combined load.

This calculates a watt budget, not runtime, VA requirements or a guarantee that a particular model will support your equipment. Without JavaScript: add the three loads, then multiply by 1.25 for the example headroom.

1500VA does not mean hours of backup

VA and watts are separate capacity limits. Neither specifies how many minutes the battery will last at your load. Check both ratings and then the manufacturer’s runtime chart.

Connected loadManufacturer runtime estimateBuying implication
500W (half of its 1000W rating)10 minutesCompare this window with your shutdown needs.
1000W (full rated load)2.5 minutesNear-limit operation leaves much less time.

Do not linearly extrapolate these two points to guess runtime at another load. Battery condition and operating circumstances matter. The practical goal is a comfortable shutdown window, not running the battery to exhaustion.

Popular Mechanics published an independent review on October 14, 2026. Its modem-and-router test is useful context, but a light networking load is not a proxy for a gaming PC. This guide does not claim the product is on sale.

Buy features you will actually use

Power compatibility

Check voltage, plug type and the equipment manufacturer’s waveform requirements. CyberPower’s PFC Sinewave range is designed for active-PFC compatibility. That does not mean every other UPS waveform fails with every PC.

Automatic shutdown

Check whether the unit offers a supported USB connection and shutdown software for your operating system. An unattended PC needs a configured shutdown plan, not just a battery underneath the desk.

The right outlets

Identify battery-backed outlets separately from surge-only outlets. Reserve battery capacity for essentials and follow the manual’s load and connection instructions.

Ownership cost

Compare the unit, delivery, replacement-battery availability and warranty service. A cheap initial price can be less attractive if the correct replacement battery is difficult to obtain.

AVR—automatic voltage regulation—can correct certain voltage variations without drawing on the battery. It is worth checking when comparing models, alongside runtime and compatibility.

Two starting points—not a universal winner

CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD

Published capacity: 1000VA / 600W. A candidate to investigate for lower-load setups when its runtime chart and compatibility meet your needs.

Skip it if: your load, required headroom or desired runtime exceeds what it can deliver.

Check manufacturer specifications

CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD

Published capacity: 1500VA / 1000W. A candidate when your setup needs more watt capacity; use the runtime examples above as reference points.

Skip it if: a smaller suitable unit meets your needs, or you are expecting hours of high-power gaming.

Check manufacturer specifications

Compare alternatives from other manufacturers at the same actual load and runtime target. Similar VA labels do not establish equivalent battery capacity or value. Check exact model suffixes and regional specifications before ordering.

Compare prices after checking the fit

These affiliate searches help locate candidates. They are not verified offers, stock confirmations or endorsements of every search result. Check the exact model, condition, seller and delivered price.

Before your first outage

  1. Follow the unit’s manual for battery connection, charging, placement and ventilation.
  2. Connect only the equipment covered by your load plan.
  3. Configure supported automatic shutdown if you need unattended protection.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s prescribed test procedure and confirm your shutdown plan works.
  5. Keep a separate data backup. Battery backup does not replace file backup.

Networking equipment remaining powered does not guarantee that your internet provider’s network will remain available during an outage.

Specifications and runtime estimates come from CyberPower; sizing principles come from Schneider Electric. Popular Mechanics provides a recent independent review. Our comparisons and worked load calculation are editorial guidance, not our own electrical testing or a product certification.

We have not established current retailer prices or a category-wide surge in UPS demand. The reason to consider one is the interruption you need to manage, not an unverified popularity claim.
