PS5 storage full? Choose the right SSD before paying for more space.
1TB or 2TB? Internal or USB? The useful upgrade is the one that keeps your games ready to play without spending money on the wrong drive.

2TB for a busy library. 1TB for a tighter budget.
Choose 2TB if you regularly delete games you still want to play, share the console, or want several large titles installed together. Choose 1TB when it comfortably covers your active library and the saving matters more than extra space.
Do not upgrade just because a sale banner says to. If your current storage works for you, keep the money. If both capacities look expensive, deleting completed games or moving suitable games to existing USB extended storage may be enough for now.
| Your situation | Sensible starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few active games and a firm spending cap | 1TB compatible M.2 SSD | Useful additional capacity without paying for space you may not use |
| Several large games or multiple players | 2TB compatible M.2 SSD | More room for the games you want immediately available |
| An archive you rarely play | Existing USB extended storage, if suitable | Can reduce redownloads, but PS5 games must be moved back to console or M.2 storage to play |
| No persistent storage problem | No purchase | Extra capacity has little value if it solves no inconvenience |
The distinction that prevents the wrong purchase
An internal M.2 SSD is the route to additional storage that can run PS5 games. A USB extended-storage drive can hold PS5 games, but cannot run them directly; move them back before playing. PS4 games can run from supported USB extended storage. See PlayStation's USB storage guidance.
A cheap portable SSD and an internal PS5 upgrade therefore solve different problems. Choose based on whether you want an archive or an immediately playable library.
The PS5 compatibility checklist
Sony specifies PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe storage, with 5,500MB/s or faster sequential reads recommended. Capacity support is 250GB to 8TB. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
Effective heat dissipation is required. The complete drive and cooling assembly must fit the bay: up to 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick, within Sony's above-board and below-board limits. Follow the official instructions for your console model. Do not add another heatsink on top of an integrated one.
For a straightforward purchase, a manufacturer-confirmed PS5-compatible drive with its heatsink already fitted reduces the number of parts you need to assess. A bare drive can still be suitable with a correctly sized cooling solution; include that cost and fitting work in the comparison.
Two 2TB heatsink-equipped options to compare
These are specific compatible candidates, not a claim that either is today's cheapest SSD. No current checkout price or coupon is confirmed here. Compare new condition, seller, warranty coverage, shipping and returns before choosing.
Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink 2TB
Match MZ-V9P2T0CW. Samsung lists PCIe 4.0 x4, M.2 2280, sequential reads up to 7,450MB/s and an integrated heatsink. Published dimensions are 80 × 24.3 × 8.2mm.
Buy it when: its delivered price and seller terms compare well with another suitable 2TB drive.
Skip the premium when: the extra cost is mainly buying a bigger advertised speed number. Manufacturer maximum speeds are not a promise of shorter loading in every PS5 game.

WD_BLACK SN850X with Heatsink 2TB
Match WDS200T2XHE. The manufacturer lists the heatsink model as PS5-compatible, with PCIe 4.0 x4, M.2 2280 and reads up to 7,300MB/s. The 2TB specification lists 1,200TBW endurance and a five-year limited warranty; check its terms and seller eligibility.
Buy it when: it provides the required capacity at the better total price from a suitable seller.
Skip it when: it costs appreciably more than an equally suitable option without a benefit you need. The similarly named non-heatsink version is a different purchase.

How to decide whether 2TB is worth the extra money
First, check the sizes of the games you actually want installed. Do not use a fixed “number of games” promise: installations and updates differ substantially. Also distinguish advertised capacity from the usable space the console reports.
Then compare the full purchase costs. Divide each delivered price by its advertised capacity in TB to compare cost per TB. This helps assess value, but the lower total bill can still be the better choice when you do not need more space.
A simple example—not a live offer
If a suitable 1TB drive costs 100 and a comparable 2TB drive costs 150, the second option doubles advertised capacity for 50% more money. If the 2TB drive costs 200, it provides no price-per-TB saving. Decide whether the additional space is worth the actual extra cost.
Do not buy 2TB purely for a speed upgrade. The benefit here is additional space and convenience. Nor should a much faster advertised Gen5 speed command an automatic premium for a console storage upgrade: start with compatibility and the workload, then price.
Before installing
Back up anything important on the drive. First-use PS5 formatting erases its contents. Follow Sony's installation guide for your console model, with the console powered off, disconnected and cool. If you are uncomfortable opening the expansion bay, use competent help. This article is a purchasing guide, not a replacement for the installation instructions.
Keep your invoice and packaging until you have confirmed the correct model and completed installation. If a drive arrives with a different heatsink or capacity, resolve that with the seller before fitting it.
Our recommendation
Buy enough compatible storage to remove a real inconvenience. For a large active library, compare the two 2TB heatsink options above and favour the better complete offer. For a smaller library, compare a suitable 1TB model before spending more. If current prices do not make sense, postpone the purchase.
